Journal · Weather & Season JUN · 2026 summer golf apparel: staying cool, dry and protected in the heat. Staying cool, dry and sun-protected when the round turns into a heat test. By Finn Calloway June 9, 2026 4 min read A five-hour round in real summer heat is a genuine physical test, and what you wear moves the needle more than most golfers realise. The right hot-weather kit keeps you cooler, drier and shielded from a serious dose of UV. The wrong stuff leaves you soaked, overheated and pink by the 12th. Here is how the fabric actually works, so you can buy well rather than by hopeful guesswork. Wicking and breathability are two different jobs These two terms get used interchangeably, and they really should not be. Wicking is about moisture: a wicking fabric pulls sweat off your skin and spreads it to evaporate, so you feel dry rather than clammy. Breathability is about airflow and vapour: a breathable fabric lets heat and water vapour pass through and escape, rather than trapping them against you. The best summer garment does both, wicking the sweat and breathing it away. A fabric can wick well and breathe poorly, or the reverse, so check for both. UPF, sun protection you can wear UPF, Ultraviolet Protection Factor, rates how much UV a fabric blocks, and it works like SPF for clothing. UPF 30 blocks about 96% of UV, and UPF 50+ blocks over 98%. For a golfer out for hours with the neck, forearms and shoulders exposed, UPF clothing is one of the most effective forms of sun protection going: it does not sweat off like sunscreen and it covers consistently, hole after hole. A Sun Protection Sleeve Full Cover is a cheap, effective way to shield your arms without adding heat. Fabric weight, colour and ventilation Weight. A lighter GSM generally breathes and dries faster, but too flimsy pills and offers less UPF, so light-but-substantial technical fabric is the sweet spot. Colour. Lighter colours reflect radiant heat and darker ones drink it in, so in peak sun, lean lighter. Texture. Open-structured weaves and eyelet knits like Sorona eyelet jersey build airflow into the fabric itself. Ventilation. Mesh panels and back vents move air exactly where you sweat most. Head Golf's warm-weather pieces are built around all this. The Performance Sleeveless Polo maximises airflow, the Sorona eyelet jersey and mesh ranges breathe by construction, and a Raffia Visor or Technical Cap keeps the sun off your face. Cover up or strip down? Here is the counter-intuitive bit: covering up in the right fabric usually beats stripping down. A breathable, wicking UPF long-sleeve shields you from UV, blocks radiant heat and moves sweat away, so it often leaves you cooler and far safer than a bare-armed golfer quietly roasting. It is why you increasingly see tour players in long sleeves in the heat. The catch is the fabric, since covering up in a hot, airless one will cook you nicely. Wicking moves sweat off your skin so you feel dry, and breathability lets heat and vapour escape the fabric so you do not overheat. A good summer garment does both. What UPF rating do I need for golf? UPF 50+ is ideal, since it blocks over 98% of UV. UPF 30 (about 96%) is a reasonable minimum for the long sun exposure of a full round. Is it better to cover up or wear short sleeves in hot weather golf? Covering up in a breathable, wicking UPF fabric often keeps you cooler and much safer than bare skin, because it blocks radiant heat and UV while letting sweat evaporate. The fabric is what matters. What fabric is best for hot weather golf? Light but substantial technical fabrics that both wick and breathe, like COOLMAX and Sorona blends and eyelet or open-structured knits, ideally with a UPF rating and ventilation.
